Mystic Five cursed stones protect the grave of Seath Mor Sgorfhiaclach on the Doune of Rothiemurchus in the Scottish Highlands.
Seath Mor Sgorfhiaclach was a 14th century chief of the Clan Shaw. Tradition has it that he was a formidable warrior, over 6 feet tall and with a crooked grin that would strike terror into the hearts of even his own people.
The tomb of this mighty warrior lies in a secluded area of the ancient forest of Rothiemurchus. But, he is apparently quite active even in death – Seath Mor has been seen on many occasions by many different people in the area of his tomb, which has five cheese shaped stones lying on top of it.
This image has appeared on literally dozens of sites over the last few years, stating (understandably, perhaps) that it’s a mortsafe to prevent the body being stolen after death.
It’s not, the body that lies under this cage was buried long before body snatchers roamed in Scotland.
It’s the grave of a Scottish clan chief.
Seath Mor, a chief of the Clan Shaw who lived in the 14th century. He was a formidable warrior, standing over 6 feet tall and had a twisted smile that could strike terror into the hearts of even his own people.
His spirit is said to appear to those who wander too deep into the forest, challenging them to do battle. Legend has it that if you show fear or run away like a coward, you will never be heard from again.
However, if you remain calm and accept the challenge, the ghostly chieftain will leave you in peace.
His burial site lies close to the kirk of the Doune of Rothiemurchus and five cylindrical stones have been placed on top of the grave.
Tradition says that anyone who dares to tamper with those stones will suffer the wrath of the clan’s guardian spirit, a familiar called Bodach an Duin (Goblin of the Doune).
In the early 19th century, a man stole the centre stone from Seath Mor’s grave and threw it into the River Spey. The following morning the stone was found back in its place and its thief was found floating dead in the river.
More recently, a wrought iron cage has been placed over the grave to keep others from making the same mistake.

People who have survived the encounters say that if you show fear or run away like a coward, you will never be heard from again. However, if you remain calm and accept the challenge, the ghostly chieftain disappears and will leave you in peace. It’s also advised to keep a safe distance from the tomb due to another entity being present – the guardian spirit of the tomb taking the form of Bodach an Duin – an elf-like spirit who has a terrible temper.
